GPT Image 2.6: Edit Product Photos, Keep the Details
A background edit is only useful if the product is still the product. A new surface or light can look convincing while a cap changes shape or a label loses a letter. Here is how to write a narrow request and catch those changes before the image goes into a listing.

Start with a photo you can check
Use the original product photo rather than a screenshot from a listing. The label should be readable and the edge should be distinct from the background. If a glossy cap disappears into a dark wall, you have little evidence for deciding whether the edit preserved it.
Keep a copy of the source. Choose one job for the edit: replace a backdrop, create room for text, or change the surface beneath the item. Asking for a new camera angle at the same time makes comparison harder because you no longer have matching edges.
In the GPT Image 2.6 workspace, choose Image to Image and upload one reference. Sunburst is the documented option for detailed visual work; Flare is aimed at fast iteration. That positioning is a starting point, not evidence that one will preserve your particular packaging better.
Split the brief into change, preserve, and exclude
“Make this look professional” leaves the model to decide what is wrong. Instead, name the new setting, list the details that must remain, and rule out additions you do not want. A bottle example:
Replace the background with a pale sage studio wall and an ivory tabletop. Preserve the product silhouette, label wording, cap, camera angle, and position from the reference. Add a soft contact shadow. Do not add props or redesign the packaging.
The first sentence defines the work. The second gives you a checklist. The last two define the shadow and exclude a common source of clutter. These instructions reduce ambiguity; they do not lock pixels in place.
For a banner, add a specific placement request such as “leave the left third clear for a headline.” Add prices, legal text, and final typography in your layout editor. A later offer change should not require regenerating the product.
Use a draft size before paying for a larger file
Start at 1K to judge the composition. On Froging AI, Flare and Sunburst each use 8 credits for 1K, 12 for 2K, and 20 for 4K. Higher resolutions require a subscription or a one-time credit purchase. Check the current cost on the Generate button.
A second generation at 4K is a new image, so inspect it again. It is not a promise of the same draft with extra pixels. Choose an ordinary ratio such as 1:1 or 4:3 if you need 2K or 4K: the 27:16, 16:27, 9:8, and 8:9 options are limited to 1K here.
If you need a cutout, select Transparent. A white backdrop can look identical in the preview but will not let another design show through. The current workspace saves PNG; it does not expose OpenAI’s SVG, GIF, complexity, or markup controls.
Check five places before publishing
Open the original and result side by side at the same display size. Then zoom in. Work down this list rather than judging the whole image from its thumbnail.
| Check | Look for | If it changed |
|---|---|---|
| Label and logo | Missing letters, changed numbers, line breaks, logo geometry | Use the original artwork or photographed product layer. |
| Silhouette and cap | A wider neck, new seams, a handle that moved, a rounded edge | Return to the original. Narrow the requested edit. |
| Color and material | A color shift, matte becoming glossy, reflections with the wrong hue | Compare with a reliable product photo; correct color separately. |
| Contact shadow | Floating product, double shadow, light from the wrong direction | Request one consistent light source or build the shadow in an editor. |
| Transparent edges | White fringe, missing glass, holes in the subject | Preview over light and dark colors; repair the alpha edge if needed. |
When to keep the real product as a separate layer
If the product must match a real SKU, do not accept a prettier image with a different label. A background-only composition is often easier to control: generate the empty setting, place the original product cutout on it, and match the contact shadow. You keep the packaging pixels instead of asking the model to redraw them.
This approach needs a design editor, especially for glass or reflections. It is worth the extra step when an altered color, capacity marking, or logo would misrepresent what is being sold. It also lets you reuse one checked product layer across several campaign backgrounds.
For a smaller defect, try one focused revision. If the next result damages another part, stop editing that result and return to the original. Repeatedly fixing a degraded image can move the product further from the source.
Save the decision with the file
Keep the source, the prompt, the model name, and the version you approved. Note any detail you corrected manually. If someone later updates the campaign, they can reuse the verified product instead of rebuilding the edit from memory.
OpenAI documents remaining limitations in text rendering, visual consistency, and precise composition. Read the image generation guide for those limits. The practical test for a shop image is still whether it represents the item accurately.
Product photo editing questions
What to check when the product needs to remain accurate.
Can GPT Image 2.6 change a background without changing the product?
You can request that edit, but unchanged product details are not guaranteed. Compare the label, cap, silhouette, color, and camera angle with the source. For exact packaging, keep the photographed product as a separate layer and place it over a new background.
Should I fix a label with another generated edit?
If you have the original label or product layer, use it in a design editor. Repeated generation can introduce another spelling or geometry error. A correct logo supplied as a real layer is easier to verify than a regenerated approximation.
Is a transparent PNG the same as a white background?
No. A transparent PNG has an alpha channel so another background can show through. A white background is part of the image. Check transparency over a contrasting color; a white preview alone cannot establish that the file is transparent.
Does this guide show a tested product photo edit?
No. It is a planning and inspection guide based on OpenAI’s documented capabilities and the controls in Froging AI. The prompt is a suggested starting point; no benchmark result or preservation rate is claimed.
